Why Invest in a Quality Hi-Fi System? 3 Reasons Music Sounds Better
December 5, 2025As music lovers, we are each as unique as our favourite tracks. We each have our own best loved songs or symphonies which move our soul and evoke distinctive memories – and we each have our own preferences as to how we listen to that music.
While some like to settle down, kick back and relax, others like the freedom of moving around, the chance to get on with life tasks while their top tunes inspire and motivate them.
There is the danger of a contradiction here between traditional hi-fi and wireless speakers. When deciding which is the best music system for you, consider the individual qualities of each and work out which is the best fit.
Stripping it back to basics, a hi-fi (High Fidelity) system is a traditional, component-based audio system which is typically made up a separate amplifier, speakers and the source, such as a turntable, CD player or streaming unit.
Hi-fi is all about sound quality and with the right combination of equipment will provide exceptional sound quality and depth and components which you can enhance and customise. Hi-fi systems are generally speaking hard wired, providing a reliable service with no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi dropouts.
At Home Media, we have an extensive range of the top-quality turntables, amplifiers and speakers from leading brands including Rega, Accuphase and Gold Note which reproduce outstanding sound. And we can use our expertise to blend great brands together to produce an exceptional experience.
The downside of a hard-wired hi-fi system, however, is its lack of flexibility and that is where portable and wireless speakers come to the fore.
Portable wireless speakers connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth so can be moved about as required. They are typically space saving and portable and easy to use. Their compact nature and inbuilt battery also make them great when you want to have music on the move.
In addition, there are also active speakers which have amps and a volume control built into the speaker cabinet; they are not connected to each other by cables but are still connected by a power cable. An example of this is the KEF LS50 which has a power cable connected to each of the two speakers but still enjoys flexibility in where the speakers can be placed. It’s also a really user-friendly speaker with app control and is also great for people who have limited space for a fully separate system but want great quality sound.
Alternatively, there is the Ruark MR1, a smaller (and cheaper) active system which can almost fit in the palm of your hand. This small but mighty speaker is great if you want to take your music into a space where there is less room available.
There are also other active speakers which don’t have a volume control and need a pre-amp connected to work. SCM40A speakers require two separate cables for each speaker – a mains power cable and a separate balanced audio interconnect cable with an XLR connector to link to your pre-amp.
So when working out which music system is best for your home, you need to first think about how you want to listen to music. Do you want to sit back and enjoy relaxing to your favourite tunes in the comfort of your lounge with everything contained? Or do you want some background beats whilst working from home?
At Home Media, we have an array of excellent active and hi-fi speakers to choose from. Whichever you choose, make sure it suits your life and space and lets you enjoy your music, your way.
