We pride ourselves on making the best recommendations possible when it comes to audio equipment for our customers – and in order to do so, it’s important to us to get to know the kit for ourselves. Thanks to the efforts of Dan Raggett of Symphony Distribution, we were recently able to enjoy an in-store demonstration of a pair of Tannoy’s SGM 10 Standmount Speakers (Super Gold Monitor) at Home Media HQ.
Fitted with a 10” diameter dual-concentric drive unit array, the SGM’s design first appeared in 1947 and has been continuously improved and refined during this time. We are in no doubt that you may have owned, or know of someone who once owned, a pair of Tannoy loudspeakers. With a history spanning almost 100 years, it is great to see the Tannoy brand very much alive and kicking.
In readiness for our listening session, Chris duly set up a system which comprised an Accuphase E-380 Integrated Amplifier alongside the Gold Note DS-10 EVO Streaming DAC to partner with the SGM 10s for the demo.
After a bit of warming up time, we listened to a selection of familiar tracks via the Qobuz streaming service, including ‘Love Came Here’ by Lhasa De Sela, ‘Here Comes The Sun/I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’ by George Benson and ‘Nobody Loves You Like I Do’ by Madrugada. We found that we were immediately, collectively drawn in by the large sound stage, speed and emotion created by the combination of these rather lovely components.
It soon became clear that life in the company of a pair of the 10” Super Golds is a very nice place to be, and with a fit and finish completed to a high standard.
There’s no denying that the retro design will not be to everyone’s liking, but rest assured the SGM 10s mean serious business – the business of enhancing your enjoyment of music. What’s more, as a result of our enthusiasm for the SGM 10s, a pair will be winging their way to our showroom very soon to join our inventory of demonstration stock.
