Our involvement with Solidair Audio begun approximately four years ago, following a demonstration of the Gyro Performance Pack as a performance upgrade for our demonstration Michell Gyro SE. With our enthusiasm running high, the design team Solidair Audio have whetted our appetite further and created performance enhancing audio upgrades for amplification, source components and loudspeakers, called the Dark Star 50 isolation feet.

The Solidair Audio Dub Star 50 Isolation for Rega Planar 6, 8 & 10 turntables are a softer sprung version of the 2″ Dark Star 50 feet. Named Dub Star as they can absorb lower frequencies and deep bass which can upset lighter equipment. The Dub Star 50 are similar in proportion and looks to the Solidair Dark Star range and designed specifically for Rega turntables with 6mm threads to locate their feet, such as the Rega Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10 models. A variant of the Dub Star 50 is also available for use with the Rega Planar 1, Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2 and Planar 3 turntables.

The Dub Star 50 turntable isolation feet can be used directly beneath lightweight hi-fi components. It can be fitted with cork facings to stop sliding occurring once in place under a component, or with threads to suit the turntable. Some Rega turntables have a 6mm thread and Project turntable an 8mm stud to locate the feet. Other thread sizes can be supplied to suit as required.

The Dub Star 50 give a clearer sound, with better instrument separation. Blacker quiet passages with reduced surface noise.

The overall diameter of the Dub Star 50 feet is 52mm (2 inches) and height around 47mm (1.8 inches) unloaded. Each foot weighs approximately 30 grams (1oz) and load capacity is up to 4kg (8lb) for a single foot. The main body of the Dub Star 50 is made from a carbon fibre tube which holds an African blackwood foot on an elastomer web. They are best used on a hard flat surface as they have an X cross section O ring in the base to provide further damping.

All wood is obtained through sustainable Cites certified suppliers.

A quantity of 3 Solidair Audio Dub Star 50 feet are supplied for Rega turntables.

1 review for Solidair Audio Dub Star 50 Isolation for Rega Planar 6, 8 & 10

Specially made for the Rega P6, 8 and 10 these turntable isolation feet are claimed to be a high performance update that will improve performance over the standard feet fitted by Rega. At first I was a bit sceptical but, nonetheless, carried out some back to back comparison tests through a variety of amplifiers, speakers and cartridges to try and isolate any differences that could be directly linked to the isolation feet and to assess their impact. In all honesty, I needn’t have bothered because, in all instances, when played with the Solidair feet attached, the system sounded better, and I mean much better, than the comparable Rega shod version.

Naturally, the different set ups sounded different, but the point was to see if, regardless of the system, its sound reproduction was affected by the Solidair feet. For me that is an unqualified yes. So much so that after my testing I found it difficult to listen to my Rega P6 in standard form and I have bought and fitted the Solidair feet.

I tried out a variety of music. I love Christina Deutekom’s portrayal in Rossini’s Armida. This was my first comparison and the improvement with Solidair fitted was startling; her voice was more vibrant, intricate and delicious, with absolute clarity over its range. The deep percussion in the Colin Davis/LSO recording of Hector Berlioz’s Les Franc Jude rumbled with real menace. In Duet, the interplay between Doris Day’s voice and Andre Previn’s twinkling piano was sublime with all aspects of the recording enhanced. Even Rod Stewart’s Atlantic Crossing revealed new information, especially on the slow side where the double bass clearly burbled away with its delicate little riffs.

Isolation feet, by their very nature, can have no direct involvement in the sound retrieval, amplification and delivery processes, but the Solidair feet seem to remove any obstacles to those processes and allow the systems to work their magic and produce a truly authentic reproduction of what the recording company intended.

In short, I think that this is a fabulous upgrade. Everything sounds better offering even greater clarity, depth, detail and musicality. I know that there are cost implications, but Rega really should consider fitting these as factory standard.
