Throughout the late 1970s, Foreigner established themselves as one of the leading arena rock bands of the era, standing shoulder to shoulder with groups such as Journey and Styx. Yet despite their remarkable success, the band was still searching for the defining album that would elevate them to the very pinnacle of rock stardom.

That album arrived in 1981 with 4.

As noted by AllMusic, 4 proved to be the breakthrough masterpiece Foreigner had been striving toward. Central to its success was producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who had just delivered AC/DC’s monumental Back in Black. In Lange, guitarist and principal songwriter Mick Jones found the perfect creative partner. The combination of Lange’s meticulous production style and Jones’ disciplined, song-focused musicianship resulted in an album where every note serves a purpose and every track shines with clarity and confidence.

The album opens with the energetic “Night Life” and unfolds through a remarkable collection of melodic rock gems, including “Woman in Black,” “Don’t Let Go,” and the nostalgic, ’50s-inspired “Luanne.” Among its many highlights, however, “Juke Box Hero” stands as one of Foreigner’s most enduring anthems. Driven by powerful guitar riffs, soaring vocals, and an unforgettable story of rock-and-roll ambition, the song remains a cornerstone of classic rock radio.

Equally iconic is “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” one of the defining power ballads of the decade. Its heartfelt melody and emotional resonance helped it cross genre boundaries, earning a lasting place in popular music while introducing listeners to the album’s more tender side. Another beautiful gem, “Girl on the Moon,” further showcases the band’s gift for sophisticated songwriting and memorable melodies.

Then there’s “Urgent,” the album’s infectious and unexpected smash hit. Blending rock energy with a distinctive groove and featuring Junior Walker’s unforgettable saxophone performance, the track remains one of Foreigner’s most recognizable and celebrated recordings.

More than four decades after its original release, Foreigner 4 continues to stand as a landmark album of the arena rock era. Presented here in this definitive deluxe 45 RPM 2LP edition from Analogue Productions, it delivers the music with exceptional clarity, dynamics, and presence, offering the finest listening experience this classic album has ever received.
