Our team are frequently out and about installing newly purchased products following a home demonstration throughout the home counties. Whilst it’s normal practice for us to apply attention to detail in order to attain the best performance from a system, there are some systems that are worthy of talking about more than others.
The purpose of our visit on this occasion was to install a brand-new pair of ATC SCM-50ASLT active loudspeakers. Having originally left our demo active SCM-50s in situ whilst awaiting the delivery of the new speakers, the new owner had time to get acquainted with the sound of the system. Once our demonstration ’50 actives were carefully packed for safe return to our showroom, we focussed on the fun part – making the new speakers sing.
In this instance, the system comprised of a streamer and Super Audio CD source, namely an Auralic Altair 2.1 and Denon DCD-A110, though more often than not, it’s the Auralic streamer that is put to work. Partnering the source components is a Gryphon Audio Pandora preamplifier with its own dedicated power supply in an identical chassis.
Chris and Simon made a slight adjustment to speaker positioning with the help of some familiar demo tracks. Our care and attention with positioning resulted in a sound stage with an intimate centre image, whilst retaining width across the sound stage. The audio presentation of the system also had height and depth, making the pleasure of listening all the more an immersive experience. Spending time in the company of the Gryphon Pandora and ATC SCM-50ASLTs really is a lovely place to be.
Having good experience of the benefits of decoupling speakers, we took along a set of Wellfloat Delta feet to see if improvements could be made to an already fine sounding system. Within 10 minutes, Chris and Simon had aligned the Wellfloat Deltas beneath the speaker spikes. The ‘50 actives were now sitting approximately 25mm taller, floating on a bed of four Deltas each, allowing for lateral movement of the speaker cabinet to minimise the effects of internal and external resonance.
With the Wellfloat Deltas in situ, round two of the listening session commenced, resulting in a cleaner, quicker, tighter and more tuneful bass, with more texture. As a result of the improvement to the lower register, mid and high frequency detail was more apparent with more airiness and increased depth within the sound stage. Prior to introducing the Deltas, the way the system sounded gave Chris and Simon no reason to feel it was lacking in any department. However, with the Deltas in position, things just got better. At the cost of approximately £500 per corner, the Wellfloat Deltas are a considered addition and one that might just awaken the hairs on the back of your neck…
